COLD WEATHER GEAR
|
As cold days approach please make sure that the students are to dress appropriately for the
cold days. Students are only allowed to wear navy blue sweaters in school. As mentioned before, we will have outdoor recess daily, weather permitting. All student are expected to participate in recess when the temperature is 35 degrees or above (this includes wind chill temperatures). However, when the temperature and wind chill falls below 35 degrees, the students will be kept indoors. The chilly morning is an indication that the Fall weather is here. Students will need a sweater, sweatshirt, or jacket to be able to enjoy their outdoor recess. Please make sure they have their navy blue sweater, navy blue sweatshirt, or jacket before heading to the gym for lunch/recess break. Request for a student to stay indoor based on health reasons will be honored. Please provide a verification of a doctor’s note. |

TOYS
|
No toys are allowed to be brought to school unless otherwise specifically allowed by me. In such case, there will be note in the Daily Planner and an email will be sent. Toys will be confiscated and put in May Box. Contents of the May Box are given back to the owners at the end of the school year (thus the name 'May Box').

WATER BOTTLES
|
Please know that the students will not be allowed to go out to get a drink of water when the class is in session. The main reason is that on average it takes almost 5 minutes for them to get back, and thus they miss the lesson being taught. Some teachers have reported that they have caught students wandering around in the hallway. This I can attest to as well as I too have redirected many students back to the class. It is requested that you send a water bottle with your student which they can refill during breaks.

CLASS PICTURES
|
If you don't see your child in the pictures or just their back, please know that it could be because I don't have permission from you to include your child in the pictures. Out of respect of your wishes, I have not included any pictures that has your child in them or just their back so that they are not recognizable. Permission slips were sent home on September 20 in their Friday Folder.
I document the school year by taking pictures of the students involved in various activities. Some of these pictures are posted on Facebook (school page) and the year book. I also create a class album accessible through the link on this website where I upload all the pictures I take (google drive). This gives parents an opportunity to get a peek inside the classroom. I can do that only if I have consent from the parents. If you have conditions or if you don't want to have your student's picture taken, your decision will be honored. In the class album, I only name the events not the students. So please email me soon and let me know of your decision. ([email protected]) |

AFTER SCHOOL CLASS VISIT
|
Some students visit the classroom after or before school hours to pick up something they had forgotten. Their parents have keys which they use to open the locked classroom doors. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS AGAINST THE SCHOOL POLICY. The administration and I feel very strongly about this because
1. it is not fair to those students who too have forgotten a paper or book, but their parents do not have keys and as a result get tardy, and 2. we are not teaching the students an important life skill. I believe that a lesson learned now is worth it even if a few points are lost, rather than later when consequences are higher and can have life long effects. We all forget things from time to time, and that is why we have a tardy policy in place. NOTE 1: I put away all the papers before leaving, so coming back for a forgotten worksheet when I am not there will not help. NOTE 2: I am happy to see and talk to students before or after school. If the students have a problem or something they are struggling with, I am happy to help. My only request is let me know beforehand. This way I know that a student is looking for me, and I can keep an eye out for him/her. Just because I am in the building does not mean that I am in the classroom. So just let me know via email. Thanks. |

HEALTHY
SNACK AWARDS |
In order to encourage healthy eating among students, a new reward program was introduced this last week. The students were given a card. I use this card to mark off when they have a healthy snack to eat, and they actually eat it. Every four check marks earns a reward coin. Healthy snacks include fruits, vegetables (for example, cucumbers, carrots, etc.), granola bar, yogurt, and nuts.
Please note that due to many spills, juice pouches and juice boxes are no longer allowed to be consumed in class during snack time. The students can have them with lunch. |

PARENT
VOLUNTEERS AT SCHOOL |
We here at DU greatly appreciate the way parents support all the activities at school. It is very respectfully requested that please remember the guidelines when volunteering at school. We are kindly asking parents to avoid bringing younger children when volunteering in any of the school activities due to the safety of their children. In some situations, we will make the exception ONLY if the parent can manage to strap the child in a stroller. However, younger siblings are not allowed at any time to be in the classrooms. Family events such Family Reading Night, Cultural Event, etc. are the only exceptions.

SHOELACES
|
Students walking around in united shoelaces is a major safety hazard. We have some students who don't know how to tie their shoelaces properly. Sometimes the shoelaces become untied because they are too long and as a result become loose very quickly. After retying their shoes a few times, the students just give up. We have had instances of students tripping because either they stepped over their own shoelaces or another student not paying attention did. If your child is struggling with tying their shoelaces, I would recommend replacing the shoelaces with an alternate system. There are many brands available now. Lock Laces, Xpand, Stout Gear, and Hickies to name a few (available on Amazon.com). Just see which ones work for you. My two children are cross-country runners, and we got the Lock Laces for them.

I just wanted to bring a major safety hazard to your attention along with a few possible solutions. I am not connected to amazon or any of these brands. |

FRIDAY
FOLDERS |
Students take home Friday Folders on Friday. This folder contains graded work. Please review the papers with your student. I usually grade the tests and quizzes in green ink, while the rest in purple. Tests and quizzes need to be signed and returned back to school in the Friday Folder. The school requires that we maintain them in student records here at school. So all papers graded in green need to be signed by you and sent back. The Friday Folders need to be brought in by Wednesday latest. I will not send home graded papers if I do not have a student's Friday Folder. If you have any questions, please email me.

PARENT
ASSISTANCE PROGRAM |
As you all know, the Parent Assistance Program is implemented as a means of obtaining parental support of all the activities necessary to enrich the school experience for its students, and also to promote a strong ethic of volunteerism since
actions are linked to good deeds. Additionally, we would like parents to be actively involved in the school as effective partners in our development and success. Each DU family must complete a total of 20 hours. The first 10 hours need to be completed before the start of Winter Break (by December 21). The next 10 hours need to be completed before the end of the school year (by May 24). If however you are unable to fulfill any hours due to your busy schedule, you may opt out from this program by paying the $200 fee by August 31. Please also know that parents will be charged $15 per hour for every hour that is not completed by the end of school year. |

DU INCENTIVE
PROGRAM: DU REWARD COINS |
The overall goal of this incentive program is to reinforce students for their appropriate behavior and to find ways to reward them with DU Reward Coins on a daily basis. All teachers will have DU Reward Coins to give to students, and all students have an opportunity to earn it. Students are responsible for their own coins. If coins are lost, they will not be replaced. Students will collect/save DU Reward Coins as they will be able to exchange them for some type of reward throughout the year from DU Store. Opportunities to exchange DU Reward Coins for rewards will be available at DU Store on a bi-weekly basis (every other Thursday) starting September 20, 2018.
Students were given ziplock bags with their names on them to collect their coins in. As per classroom policy, the students are not allowed to do joint coin collection as it has led to problems in the past. If they still decide to do so, dear parents, please note that they are doing it without my permission, and I have told the students that any problems arising as a result will not be resolved by me. I have also recommended to the students that at the end of the school day on Friday, they should take the coins home for the weekend. I recommended assigning a small pocket in their backpacks to put coins in. The classroom is used for various activities over the weekend. |

SNACK TIME
|
Students get 10 minutes to have a little snack between period 2 and 3. Please only pack those snacks with your child which they can easily handle and are not messy. As per school policy, candy (even chocolate covered nuts) is not an acceptable snack.
