InshaAllah, Fall picture retakes will take place on Monday, October 15, 2018.
If your child did not get a picture taken on original picture day, please get the fall picture retake flyer from the office. If you were photographed on the original picture day and not satisfied with the picture, you can also retake your picture. However, please bring and return the entire original picture packet on the retake picture day. Retake order will be the same as original order placed.
This is a uniform-free day only for those students who are getting retakes done, and we require students to dress Islamically appropriate. All other students must wear appropriate school attire. Parents are welcome to purchase photos online at www.inter-state.com/order.
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2018. We will once again be using the online scheduling through the use of Google Docs.
For Pre-K1-3rd grade, parents may access the sign-up sheets by clicking on the respective links below. However, this Google spreadsheet is not meant to be edited by the phone's browser. Signing up will have to be done with a laptop or desktop. If you would like to do it through the phone, it is recommended to install the Google drive app. Please be sure to arrive on-time so that teachers are able to maintain their set schedules.
Conferences for students in Grade 4-8 and Islamic Studies, Arabic/Quran, Computer Studies, and Physical Education will be held in the classrooms as stated attached. Parents may meet with the teachers for 15 minutes on a first-come, first-serve basis. Teachers will be available between 8:00-11:30AM and 12:15PM-3:45PM (with prayer break at 1:30-1:45PM).

JEWELRY AND OTHER ACCESSORIES
When students come to school, their main focus should be on their education. However, these last a few weeks it has been observed that there seems to be jewelry/ accessories competition happening in class. One would wear one of those headbands with ears, and in a few days I will notice a few more girls wearing something similar. One girl would come with her hair open, and sure enough the next day a few more would come in with their hair open. Jewelry and fashion/ fancy accessories are not allowed in school during school hours. They are a major distraction. Please make sure that when you send your student to school, they should be as simply dressed in their school uniform as possible. A dark blue dress is not part of a school uniform. Hoodies or cardigans which are not dark blue will not be allowed to be worn inside the building during school hours since they are not part of the uniform. They need to be dark blue and devoid of pictures. Girls need to have their hair off their face and tied back.
Jazakullah Khair for your cooperation.
Students walking around in united shoelaces is a major safety hazard. We have some students who don't know how to tie their shoelaces properly.Sometimes the shoelaces become untied because they are too long and as a result become loose very quickly. After retying their shoes a few times, the students just give up. We have had instances of students tripping because either they stepped over their own shoelaces or another student not paying attention did. If your child is struggling with tying their shoelaces, I would recommend replacing the shoelaces with an alternate system. There are many brands available now. Lock Laces, Xpand, Stout Gear, and Hickies to name a few (available on Amazon.com). Just see which ones work for you. My two children are cross-country runners, and we got the Lock Laces for them.
DISCLAIMER: Please note that I am not asking you to buy these no-ties shoelaces, and nor am I promoting a certain brand. I just wanted to bring a major safety hazard to your attention along with a few possible solutions. I am not connected to amazon or any of these brands.
Students required to attend the school in specified uniform. Please refer to Student Handbook for details.
As we head into Fall, students sometimes feel a little chilly. They are allowed to wear a hoodie/ cardigan inside as long as it is plain solid dark blue with no to very little design on them. No other color is allowed. Jazakullah Khair for your cooperation.
Students take home Friday Folders on Friday. This folder contains graded work. Please review the papers with your student. I usually grade the tests and quizzes in green ink, while the rest in purple. Tests and quizzes need to be signed and returned back to school in the Friday Folder. The school requires that we maintain them in student records here at school. So all papers graded in green need to be signed by you and sent back. The Friday Folders need to be brought in by Wednesday latest. I will not send home graded papers if I do not have a student's Friday Folder. If you have any questions, please email me.
PARENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
As you all know, the Parent Assistance Program is implemented as a means of obtaining parental support of all the activities necessary to enrich the school experience for its students, and also to promote a strong ethic of volunteerism since
actions are linked to good deeds. Additionally, we would like parents to be actively involved in the school as effective partners in our development and success.
Each DU family must complete a total of 20 hours. The first 10 hours need to be completed before the start of Winter Break (by December 21). The next 10 hours need to be completed before the end of the school year (by May 24). If however you are unable to fulfill any hours due to your busy schedule, you may opt out from this program by paying the $200 fee by August 31. Please also know that parents will be charged $15 per hour for every hour that is not completed by the end of school year.
DU INCENTIVE PROGRAM: DU REWARD COINS
The overall goal of this incentive program is to reinforce students for their appropriate behavior and to find ways to reward them with DU Reward Coins on a daily basis. All teachers will have DU Reward Coins to give to students, and all students have an opportunity to earn it. Students are responsible for their own coins. If coins are lost, they will not be replaced. Students will collect/save DU Reward Coins as they will be able to exchange them for some type of reward throughout the year from DU Store. Opportunities to exchange DU Reward Coins for rewards will be available at DU Store on a bi-weekly basis (every other Thursday) starting September 20, 2018.
Students were given ziplock bags with their names on them to collect their coins in. As per classroom policy, the students are not allowed to do joint coin collection as it has led to problems in the past. If they still decide to do so, dear parents, please note that they are doing it without my permission, and I have told the students that any problems arising as a result will not be resolved by me. I have also recommended to the students that at the end of the school day on Friday, they should take the coins home for the weekend. I recommended assigning a small pocket in their backpacks to put coins in. The classroom is used for various activities over the weekend.
Students get 10 minutes to have a little snack between period 2 and 3. Please only pack those snacks with your child which they can easily handle and are not messy. As per school policy, candy (even chocolate covered nuts) is not an acceptable snack.

Peoria Public Library Bookmobile visits Daarul Uloom School every other Thursday. This provides students with an opportunity to check out books to read.
- Please note that due to time constraints, I am not able to check the books of each and every student that they check out. I would appreciate it that when your child gets home on Bookmobile day, you ask your child about the books they checked out. Bookmobile allows them to issue 2 books at a time.
- Some students are not able to take advantage of this opportunity because they still do not have their library cards. To be able to check out books from the bookmobile the students need library cards from their local public library.
- Peoria Public Library has a fine limit of $5. If a card shows a fine of $5 or above, the students cannot check out books.
- Bookmobile visits are a privilege. Bookmobile visits generally take about 20 minutes from class time, therefore the students get a warning that if they continue not following directions, they will not be able to visit the bookmobile. In such case, I ask them to put their library books that they brought in for return in a box which I later take to the bookmobile for drop off. So far we've had one visit. Alhamdulillah, it went well. However, chattiness is an issue and I have already warned the students. In case, the students lose their privilege, their books will be returned but they won't be able to check out new ones.
At dismissal time, parents are asked to pick up their child and exit the gym. The gym is not the place to talk to another parent while your child is running around unsupervised. Also, all teachers are on duty at this time and are unable to speak to you about your child. I am more than willing to set up a conference time for us to speak about your child. Until 3:30, however, I am in charge of all of my students remaining in the gym and cannot talk to you at that time. Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation.
